“Probably the biggest insight is that happiness is not just a place, but also a process. Happiness is an ongoing process of fresh challenges, and it takes the right attitudes and activities to continue to be happy.”

Why Therapy For Athletes

As a former professional Athlete in the National Football League (NFL) and NCAA Division I (D-1) college coach, Richard Seigler is no stranger to team disruptions and the impact it has on everyone involved. All too often you hear about an athlete that is dealing with a mental health concern, substance abuse issues, or relational difficulties who eventually acts out in a manner that ultimately sabotaged their opportunities to remain competitive.  This disruption not only impacts the individual, but consequences reach far and wide and include family, teammates, coaches, universities and organizations.  While coaching college football and dealing with the mental and behavioral health concerns of athletes administratively, it was decided at that time something had to be done to save athletes from ruining their athletic careers and – ultimately –  their lives.

Therapy For Athletes was created to offer services to address the mental, emotional and behavioral health concerns impacting athletes.  Human behavior is learned and can be measured within the context of the family and/or community in which it has originated.  Athletes are no different, and are products of their surroundings; which usually produces a competitive mentality but might not have prepared them for the challenges that accompany their new athletic platform.

Therapy For Athletes is here for preventive and/or consequential mental health services.  Our mission is to keep players in the game by minimizing distractions for athletes, teams, universities and professional organizations; allowing everyone to focus on winning in competitions and in the game of life.

Philosophy

At the foundation of a systemic therapist is the concept that we are all products of our environment.  Family systems theories teaches us that nothing in life has impacted our mental health as deeply as our relationships with our families, communities, coaches and teammates; nor will anything demand as much effort to create and maintain as healthy relationships.  People find their greatest joys being shared with others, and when those relationships are in a good place, we tend to be in a good place.

Richard Seigler is passionate about people leading empowered, connected, and purposeful lives. He provides counseling services to diverse clients as they learn, change, grow, and function in increasingly inspired, creative, healthy and adaptive ways. This is accomplished by working collaboratively with clients in identifying needs, making changes, and practicing new skills in a safe and supportive setting. Richard Seigler experiences include working with individuals, couples, families, as well as adolescent and children; on issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, impulsivity, suicidal thoughts/behavior, grief, anger, and unwanted thoughts and emotions.

Primarily, Richard Seigler uses Systems Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Strength Based approaches; while including an array of other evidenced based therapeutic modalities to help the individual, couple, family and/or team accomplish their goals. These approaches will work to discover underline influences for concerns, while collaborating to create goals for counseling, and collectively working towards achieving our mission.
